15 October 2009Stop Making Sense Turns 25

Stereogum alerted me to the fact that Jonathan Demme's film Stop Making Sense is turning 25, and is getting released on Blu-Ray for the anniversary.

I can't think of a band that's had more influence on me in the past few years than Talking Heads. They'd essentially broken up by the time I was born, with this film - of their last tour - being released the year after, but I'd certainly heard bits of their music around a reasonable amount. Any Late Show fans (the Australian, D-Generation version) would probably remember David Boon's version of "Once in a Lifetime".

It was only recently that I really listened to their music, largely as a result of me seeing this film. To hear a band play this well is always exciting, but the juxtaposition of the fairly bleak themes of the lyrics with the the joyful nature of the performance makes this film give me goosebumps every time I listen to it. The last clip on the Stereogum post is of them performing "Once in a Lifetime". Watch it to the end, turned up loud.
